I wouldn't say I'm someone who reads comics a lot, since I didn't really grow up with them personally. Sure, my dad would enthusiastically show me Arabic copies of Tintin or Asterix comics stolen from the internet which were usually missing a few pages and scanned in a weird angle, but other than that I never really followed any specific comic or manga.
However, there's this one comic that I used to read a lot when I was a teen, based on an animated TV show called Avatar The Last Airbender. It used to be one of my favourite shows back then, and it's still one of the best shows I ever watched in my opinion. After I finished watching the show (for possibly the third time), I spent a lot of time consuming fan content or looking up for more content on the internet, and that's when I found out that the series had a comic. And even a continuation comic that continued from where the animated series left off.
The one I'm about to show is a collection of short stories that supposedly happened in between the episodes of the animated series. It was a perfect comic for those who wanted to see more from these characters, especially when they were just goofing around and having fun.
This one in particular is my favorite, it's a fun interaction between Sokka (the guy in blue) and Zuko (the guy in red) about a word that Sokka made up, "Swordbending". The context is that in this universe, the ability to control the elements is called "bending". So if you're controlling water it's called waterbending, and if you're controlling fire it's firebending, etc. Zuko insists there's no such thing as Swordbending. Sokka challenges Zuko to a duel, and they fight for a while, but as expected, Zuko happens to have much more experience than Sokka, so ends up beating him every time. As a last resort, Sokka cheats by throwing a boomerang, which results in Zuko accidentally using the word "swordbending". So Sokka proudly claims he lost the battle of swords, but won the battle of words.
I love this comic because it features two of my favorite characters, and also because I love the way Sokka tries to find victory in new ways, even if he sucks at brute strength and raw skill compared to other characters. I also love their interaction in general because they don't really get the chance to do that in the animated series.
Ah! I see! I think this was a movie and a TV show too! I can see why it would be an excited read when you are young!
